Fallows Rest Boarding Kennels is a small operation here in Upper Esk, at the top of the Fingal Valley. We provide calm, quiet kennelling in a rural environment, with well-insulated sleeping areas and generous roofed pens. You can leave your pet here with peace of mind knowing they will be treated with care.
PENS: Each individual enclosure is 1.25m wide by 5m long, which is a sufficient space for up to two large dogs or up to three miniature (however one per pen is more typical). Note that only dogs from one household/owner, and without any strong food aggression, are able to share the same space.
KENNELS: Each kennel is made from a heavy-duty poly water tank laid on its side, with insulated cladding and a flap-style door. Although winters here can be cold, we add extra-thick bedding and external insulation to keep your fur-baby as comfortable as possible. Having said that, dogs with very short coats may need a warm jacket; we can provide these for a fee, if needed.
EXERCISE YARD: The exercise yard is a wide open pen (15m x 6m) with a high mesh fence and a no-dig surround. During exercise times, dogs of any size can run and romp without danger of escape. (Naturally, any time the dog spends in yard play is supervised.)
FEEDING: Dogs are fed once to twice daily, depending on age and requirements. Meals are typically dry food with supplementary wet food (this can be a home-made mix of wallaby, minced chicken bone, rice, carrots, broccoli and seaweed meal for minerals; or it can be Tasmanian-made grain-free ‘dog log’). Special dietary needs should be advised up front (you may feel best supplying the feed, as we would have to charge higher fees), and there is a small extra charge for the giving of medications.
PRICES:
One dog, one pen: Small $28/night; Medium $33/night; Large: $37/night; extra large: $42/night.
Two dogs, one pen: Small (per dog) – $22/night; Medium – $26/night; Large – $31/night; Extra Large: $36/night.
PICKUP HOURS:
Visits to the kennels for drop-offs or pickups should be only at pre-arranged times. When making your booking, be sure to specify an approximate time of arrival and also of pickup. Pickup times can be renegotiated if you expect to run late.
NB: If you do find yourself running late, please call before you leave a city or town area (e.g. Fingal or Mathinna), as there is no mobile signal in this part of the valley.
PAYMENT:
Boarding can be paid for any time between booking and collection, provided that payment takes place before the dog leaves.
Payment is best made either by cash or by direct deposit (again, there is no mobile signal here, so you may need to pay before you leave a town area to collect your dog).
DO WE PROVIDE A PICKUP/DROP-OFF SERVICE?
Fallows Rest offers a pet pickup and drop-off service in Fingal/St Marys for clients who wish to have their pets boarded but cannot make the return drive. Customers interested in arranging this service should ring us to discuss. The fee for pickup typically includes a fuel cost and a cleaning cost for the vehicle, however we do not charge for travel time.
DIRECTIONS:
Coming via Fingal, turn onto Brown St, go across the railway line, then follow the same road around and over the bridge. Immediately after the bridge, veer right.
Stay on the same road (which becomes Mathinna Rd and then Upper Esk Rd) all the way to Upper Esk, where the road turns to gravel. Drive on this gravel road for another 600m past the Gunns Rd turnoff, and you’ll see the Fallows Rest sign on the left. Please shut the gate after you come in, because sheep are roaming.
Continue up the driveway for about 200m until you see the kennels to the far right, then pull up and blow the horn!
If you need to go to the airport after drop-off, the path over Roses Tier is rough but direct; it can get you to the turnoff to Evandale in about 45 minutes, if you don’t mind the 25km of gravel driving.

ABOUT THE PROPERTY: Fallow’s Rest is home to a range of wildlife including quolls, devils, wombats, echidnas and platypus, with fallow deer an occasional passer-by. The property also runs a small flock of sheep, pet guinea pigs and chickens.
Further away from the kennels is a dense grove of rainforest where the creekbanks feature rare burrowing crayfish with their strange mounded ‘chimneys’. There are also various plants like native jasmine, blackwood trees and ancient man-ferns.

At half an hour from Fingal and under an hour from Launceston, Fallow’s Rest Boarding Kennels is a caring short-stay home for farm dogs, pet dogs and all dogs that love being among nature.
